About Karbala Tours

Karbala, Iraq

The Battle of Karbala, a pivotal event in early Islamic history, took place on October 10, 680 AD (10th of Muharram, 61 AH) near Karbala, Iraq. It involved a small group of supporters led by Husayn ibn Ali, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, against a much larger army of the Umayyad Caliphate. Husayn and his companions were killed, solidifying the event as a symbol of resistance against injustice and oppression for Shia Muslims, who commemorate it annually on Ashura.

Key Aspects of the Battle:

  • Context: Husayn ibn Ali refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid I, the Umayyad Caliph, whom he considered a corrupt ruler.
  • Location: The battle occurred near Karbala, a city in present-day Iraq.
  • Participants: Husayn's forces, numbering around 70-145, faced a vastly superior Umayyad army of 4,000-5,000 soldiers.
  • Outcome: The Umayyad army achieved a decisive victory, resulting in the deaths of Husayn and most of his companions.

Significance:

  • Martyrdom: Husayn and his companions are revered as martyrs by Shia Muslims.
  • Shia Identity: Karbala is a foundational event in Shia Islam, shaping their identity and theology.
  • Symbol of Resistance: The battle became a symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice for many Muslims.
  • Annual Commemoration: The event is commemorated annually on Ashura, a day of public mourning and remembrance.
  • Impact on Islamic History: The battle contributed to the development of Shia-Sunni divisions and the eventual overthrow of the Umayyad dynasty.
